Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
Thought Work to Change Your Trauma Narrative
-
What is CPT?
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a structured, evidenced-based treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It typically lasts for 12 sessions. It focuses on helping you understand how the way you think about a trauma is keeping you stuck - and how to move forward.
-
Who can benefit from it?
If you have experienced an intensely negative event in your past that seems to continue to impact you, you may be a good fit for CPT. CPT is designed to treat PTSD, so we will work together to assess your symptoms to see if this treatment may be right for you.
-
How does it work?
When something traumatic happens, it’s common to develop intense, negative beliefs about yourself, others, and the world. These are our mind’s way of trying to make sense of the trauma - but typically keeps us stuck in the past. CPT helps you to understand your feelings, challenge stuck points, and develop a new narrative. Daily practice is a key part of this treatment.
*CPT does NOT typically require you to repeatedly share details about the trauma experience.
-
How long is treatment?
Treatment typically lasts for 12 weekly sessions - with an option for more sessions per week if desired. Daily practice outside of session allows this to be a structured, short-term type of therapy.
